Random country generator

Pick a random country — weighted by how many people really live there, or with every country equal.

Press the button to pick a country.

In short: population-weighted picks land in Asia about 59% of the time and in India or China about 35% of the time, because that is where people actually live. A uniform pick ignores size, so small island states come up as often as giants.

Population vs births: why the random life game differs

This generator weights by everyone alive today. Our random life simulator weights by births instead — where babies are being born right now. That shifts the odds toward Africa: Nigeria has under 3% of the world's people but about 6% of its births, while Japan has 1.5% of the people and only 0.5% of births.

FAQ

Is this random country generator weighted by population?

By default, yes: each country's chance equals its share of the world's people (UN World Population Prospects 2024). India and China together come up about 35% of the time. Switch to “Every country equal” for a uniform pick where Vatican City is as likely as India.

How many countries can it pick?

197: the 193 UN member states, the two UN observer states (Vatican City and Palestine), plus Taiwan and Kosovo.

What is the chance of getting the United States?

About 4.2% when weighted by population — roughly 1 pick in 24. With every country equal it is 1 in 197.

Can I spin for a single continent?

Yes. Choose a region and the generator only picks from that continent, still weighted by population if that mode is on.
